How to Light a Nigerian Living Room
A single centre light asks one fixture to handle three different jobs: general illumination, task lighting for reading or phone calls, and the ambience you want when guests are over. It's rarely equal to all three.
Start with a statement piece, a chandelier or large pendant, as the room's anchor, sized to the room rather than the ceiling. As a rough guide, add the room's length and width in feet and use that number in inches as the fixture diameter.
Layer in wall lights or floor lamps at seating height. This is what makes a living room feel finished in the evening, when overhead light alone reads as harsh or clinical.
Finally, use dimmable downlights for flexible general lighting: bright for cleaning and daytime use, low for evenings. If your supply isn't dimmable, plan two separate circuits instead: one for the statement fixture, one for ambient downlights.
